Warning: E.coli Found in Smuggled Onions at Paco Market
The Department of Agriculture discovered E.coli in onions smuggled into the Paco Public Market in Manila. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the risk to public health and vowed to confiscate the contaminated onions. The Bureau of Plant Industry alerted the Manila LGU about the issue, urging the removal of the tainted produce to prevent food-borne illnesses.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) warned against buying smuggled onions after samples from Paco Public Market in Manila tested positive for E. coli bacteria. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the threat to public health and the need for confiscation as per the Food Safety Act of 2013. Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Director Gerald Glenn Panganiban highlighted possible fecal contamination and poor sanitation in handling the onions. E. coli can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, appearing days after exposure. The DA recommended confiscating the commodities to protect consumers. No permits for onion imports have been issued to support local farmers. Monitoring units are on alert for smuggled onions, with efforts to apprehend smugglers ongoing. A separate shipment of red onions will be tested for contaminants before potential redistribution by the government.
