Failure in Child Abuse Training Preceded Alfie Steele's Tragic Murder in Droitwich
A police report revealed that officers who had contact with nine-year-old Alfie Steele and his family lacked proper training to recognize signs of child abuse. Alfie was later killed by his mother and her partner in Droitwich, Worcestershire. Despite the tragedy, the report found no officer misconduct. Alfie's grandfather criticized the report as a misuse of public funds.

A police watchdog's report concluded that a police force, which repeatedly met the family of a nine-year-old boy later murdered in his home, did not adequately train front-line officers to identify child abuse. Alfie Steele was killed by his mother and her partner at their home in Droitwich, Worcestershire, in 2021, and the pair were jailed two years later. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) examined twenty cases when West Mercia Police had contact with Alfie and the couple, finding no indication of misconduct by any officer. Alfie's grandfather, Paul Scott, expressed disappointment, stating, 'We see nothing in the report that shows any change; it is a waste of public money.'
