A 19-year-old man has been arrested after a two-car crash in Newcastle that resulted in the death of a 55-year-old woman from India and her unborn child, as well as serious injuries to a pregnant 28-year-old woman. The incident occurred when a White Holden Commodore, carrying four teenagers with unregistered plates, was spotted by a highway patrol officer at North Lambton. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the Commodore drove onto the wrong side of the road, leading to a collision with a Hyundai carrying the two women. The driver and a passenger of the Commodore fled the scene, leaving behind two seriously injured teenage passengers. The driver, a 19-year-old known to the police, was later arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed yet.
