11-Year-Old Caught Driving Car in Beach Car Park Leads to Chaos at Sefton Council Meeting

An 11-year-old was caught driving a car in a beach car park, leading to tighter controls being considered by Sefton Council to address anti-social behavior in coastal areas. Since 2022, the council has enforced a public spaces protection order (PSPO) to regulate activities in coastal and visitor spots.

During a recent council meeting, disruptions occurred as councillors were expected to extend the existing rules for three more years. The PSPO grants officers the authority to confiscate alcohol and ban barbecues at beaches like Formby and Crosby.

The meeting was interrupted multiple times, prompting a delay in decision-making. Notable incidents under the PSPO include finding a nude man in the dunes and an 11-year-old driving a car in a beach car park.

Over 2,000 incidents have been addressed by Green Sefton coastal rangers since 2023, with many occurring within the PSPO boundaries. The order covers various sites, including National Trust areas and nature reserves, to protect the coastline and prevent damage.

Issues such as drunken behavior, barbecues, and fly-tipping have been reported, with horse welfare concerns also highlighted. Merseyside Police support the extension of the PSPO due to reports of anti-social behavior in coastal areas.

If extended, the PSPO will continue until July 2028, enforcing restrictions on activities and behaviors in coastal spaces to maintain their integrity and safety.
