3,000 Minimum Wage Earners in La Union Benefit from Discounted Rice Program

Some 3,000 minimum wage earners in La Union province have availed of the PHP20 per kilogram rice under the national government's 'Benteng Bigas, Meron Na!' program. The initial target beneficiaries were 11,000 for this month. The employees are from 54 establishments in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of La Union.

The distribution of the PHP20 per kg rice will continue until June 30. Each eligible employee can purchase up to 10 kilos of rice. The scheme involves employers entering into a memorandum of agreement to avail of the program. The rice is purchased from the National Food Authority and distributed to the employees at PHP20 per kg.

Director Exequiel Ronie Guzman expressed optimism about the sustainability of the program until June 2028. The program aims to provide relief to vulnerable sectors and minimum wage earners. Employers and employees have expressed gratitude for the initiative.
