She defended a trip to Syria in 2018, clarifying that it was for fact-finding purposes and not in support of the government. Connolly highlighted her work ethic and commitment to democracy, noting her experience as Leas Cheann Comhairle in the previous Dáil.
Connolly expressed gratitude for the unexpected support she received from people across the country, leading her to enter the presidential race. The election to succeed Michael D Higgins is scheduled for late October or early November, with candidates requiring the support of 20 Oireachtas members to be on the ballot.
Connolly, a former barrister and clinical psychologist, has garnered support from various political parties and already has backing from over 20 Oireachtas members.
