Canadian Woman Detained by ICE in Florida Faces Legal and Financial Struggles
Paula Callejas, a Canadian entrepreneur, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while trying to expand her swimsuit business in Florida. Her family is facing challenges navigating the complex legal and immigration systems in the U.S. amidst mounting financial burdens. Callejas' detainment has been described as a 'nightmare' situation by her family.

Canadian Paula Callejas was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while trying to expand her swimsuit business in Florida. She had taken time off to care for her ailing father in Canada before his passing. The 45-year-old's family is facing financial and legal challenges as they navigate the complex U.S. legal and immigration systems.
President Donald Trump has intensified deportation efforts, targeting individuals in the country illegally. Callejas, born and raised in Montreal after her family immigrated from Colombia, started her swimsuit line in Canada around 2012. She paused her business to care for her father and resumed her efforts after his death in 2020.
Despite applying for a visa extension, Callejas was arrested for battery in March and subsequently taken into ICE custody. Her family is struggling to secure legal representation and cope with the financial strain. Callejas' mental health is deteriorating as she remains in detention.
Her family hopes for a fair legal process and eventual return to Canada to pursue her swimwear business dreams. Global Affairs Canada noted about 55 Canadians detained by ICE, with cases fluctuating as new ones emerge and existing ones are resolved.
Another Canadian, Johnny Noviello, died in ICE custody in South Florida. He had entered the U.S. legally but faced removal due to criminal convictions. Canadian officials are seeking more information on his case.
