Autogate malfunction causes delays at KLIA and Johor checkpoints, impacting foreign passport holders

Long queues have been reported at major entry points across Malaysia as tens of thousands of foreigners faced issues using the autogate facility. Malaysian passport holders, however, are unaffected by the glitch.

The breakdown, which started on July 18, involved over 200 autogates nationwide, affecting gateways like Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 and 2, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (BSI), and Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ (KSAB) in Johor.

Efforts are underway to restore the system online. The cause of the failure is still unknown, with investigations ongoing to rule out sabotage or hacking.

At BSI, mainly Singaporeans have queued for over four hours for immigration clearance. Immigration officers are manually processing passports due to the breakdown.

Additional personnel have been deployed to manage the influx of visitors at land checkpoints with Singapore. Autogate privileges, introduced since June 1, 2024, are available to visitors from 63 countries and diplomats in Malaysia.
